Thank you to all who have participated in Moms Making Miracles’ fundraising efforts. This past Tuesday, MMM was presented with a certificate of merit for promoting and funding the mission to cure pediatric cancer. The continued support of the many mothers who have attended our events is what allows us to create miracles for our children in need. Thank you so much for your help, and remember: the child you save could be your own.

A Letter from Dr. Trippett – Pediatric Oncologist at MSKCC

The following letter comes from the brilliant Dr. Trippett from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Dear Kathy,

Once again, I would like to personally express my deepest gratitude for your efforts on behalf of POETIC. Your support and dedication are greatly appreciated!

I am very sorry that I am unable to join you this morning for this wonderful event in support of our children, families, and the POETIC organization. I would be present with you if not for patient care responsibilities that I could not re-schedule.

For  children and their parents, the most devastating and overwhelming experience in life is when they receive a diagnosis of cancer.  This traumatic experience is further augmented when the child experiences a recurrence of their cancer.  Although the cure rates for newly diagnosed childhood cancers have dramatically improved in recent years, there remains a subset of children for whom a cure is not attainable.  In response to this pressing need to improve the chance for cure for those who need it most, I  formed a consortium called Pediatric Oncology Experimental Therapeutic Investigators’ Consortium (POETIC) in February 2003 in collaboration with Dr. Lia Gore at the University of Colorado/Denver in order to bring experts who treat children with cancer together with representatives from many of the major pharmaceutical companies. The goal was to bring the persons with the brightest minds and ideas together to tackle this problem and to develop new and innovative approaches to treat children with cancer.  The most important caveat of the mission of this collaboration is that each person in the group must be able to place the child and their families first. Another important part of our mission is also to ensure that new options for treatment be delivered close to home without the need for the child or parents to travel long distances for care. This enhances the well being and quality of life of the child and their parents/family through the love and support of their community of family and friends. In a few words, the mission of POETIC is to provide NEW THERAPIES and NEW HOPE. It is my sincere hope and desire that through the efforts of POETIC that we can one day envision a world for children and their parents without the fear of a cancer. We ask you to join us in this mission with your generous support.  Your gift will continue to give for years to come through the lives of our child cancer survivors and the contributions to advancing the art and science of cancer care throughout the world. I PERSONALLY thank you on behalf of the children and parents that I cherish and serve.

I leave you with two quotes that speak to why I  am  an oncologist and why I formed POETIC:

To the children for which my efforts are a tribute:

“The beauty of the soul shines out when a man bears with composure one heavy mischance after another, not because he does not feel them, but because he is a man of high and heroic temper.”
— Aristotle

To the doctors, nurses, and researchers who have joined me in this effort and to each of you here today:

“If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it.”
— Margaret Fuller<

May your life be blessed.

Mother’s Day Brunch 2010 – Thank You Moms Making Miracles

Dear Moms Making Miracles,

Thank you all so much for donating to this year’s Mother’s Day Tea Party. I feel so honored and blessed to have such beautiful, smart, compassionate friends to help bring an end to Pediatric Cancer. The Last 5 years we have grown into a great networking event for friends and women in business while raising funds and hope to help find a cure.

This year the money raised went to the brilliant Dr. Cheung fund at Memorial Sloan Kettering for 1Hg1N to fight deadly neuroblastoma. You can read more about the great work being done at BandofParents.org. The miracle drugs and vaccines that are being discovered are a last hope for these little warriors. Thanks to giving moms like you, these children and their parents have hope for a cure.

My God bless each and every one of you for helping to bring a cure closer. I know you all believe as I do that it is possible to find a cure. Keep believing! HOPE is contagious! Spread the word!

With hope, love, and much gratitude,
Kathy Bisignano

PS. Save the date for this year’s May 5th, “Cinco de Mayo” tea party. Invitations to follow! Go to www.momsmakingmiracles.org to see pictures from past year’s events.
